THE MEG – GLIDERS
In 2016 I was fortunate enough to contract to The Meg production and work in the Art Department where I designed the gliders for the film. My roll later transferred into the construction department to see the build through to the end.
Working with Grant Major, Liam Beck and Filippo Valsecchi we developed the concept and I then took the design to what you see with a talented fabrication team and outside contractors.
The Gliders presented many engineering challenges as they were working sets that would later be used on motion bases, cranes, submersed in custom built ocean tanks and taken out to sea on ships and barges.
I used the best technology available at the time to ensure the execution was as accurate as possible. Many of these techniques used to build the gliders came from my back ground in marine design and fabrication.
To make the air tight sphere open and close we used an air system and I designed a very unique K hinge for this to work.
The Sphere rotates so when the Gliders are launched in the film they descend vertically to the bottom of the ocean.
Below is an animation I created at the time when working this out.
Thanks for taking the time to read about the gliders, check back here soon as I will be adding more images and detail.
